What happened
FDA issued a final order classifying systems that detect nucleic acid from non-viral microorganisms causing sexually transmitted infections using home-collected specimens into class II with special controls. The order follows a De Novo request for LetsGetChecked’s Simple 2 Test and creates a regulatory category for similar devices that meet the controls.
Why it matters
Home collection can lower friction for STI testing, but accuracy depends on collection instructions, lab methods, reporting and follow-up. A class II pathway may make the category more scalable while keeping performance and labeling requirements visible.
What to watch
Which pathogens and specimen types future devices cover, how false results are communicated, whether positive tests connect users to treatment, and whether access improves for people who avoid clinic-based testing because of cost, stigma or geography.
