Nature Communications published a large-scale metagenomic study of the vaginal microbiome and uropathogens in women reporting recent bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections, both or neither. The work maps bacterial patterns associated with recent infections and adds detail to how vaginal microbial communities may intersect with UTI risk.

Recurrent UTI and BV are often treated as separate episodes. Metagenomic evidence can help researchers ask whether reservoirs, community states or antimicrobial resistance patterns contribute to recurrence, but it is not yet a simple diagnostic or treatment rule.

Prospective studies, whether findings predict recurrence, links with antimicrobial resistance, how self-reported infection status affects interpretation, and whether interventions can shift outcomes without overtreating the microbiome.
