What happened
WHO, HRP and UN partners estimate that nearly 30% of adolescent girls aged 15–19 experienced intimate-partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their lives in 2023. The analysis also estimates that non-partner sexual violence affects 8% of girls in this age group and is likely underreported.
Why it matters
Violence is a health-system issue as well as a rights issue. The findings point to the need for adolescent-responsive, survivor-centred sexual and reproductive health care, mental health care, prevention, education, legal protection and safer data collection.
What to watch
Country-level prevention strategies, child-marriage and education reforms, survivor-centred services and whether data collection improves without increasing risk to girls.
