What happened
Monash University and Bayside Health researchers reported that repeat bacterial vaginosis after concurrent couple treatment can follow two pathways: reinfection after sex resumes, or persistence of BV bacteria that survive initial therapy. The team is testing longer-duration and combination antibiotic approaches for the persistence pathway.
Why it matters
BV is common and recurrence can be deeply frustrating. Distinguishing reinfection from persistence could make care less one-size-fits-all, but new treatment regimens still need trial evidence before they become routine practice.
What to watch
Cure and recurrence rates from the new trial, antimicrobial-stewardship implications, partner-treatment guidance, applicability beyond monogamous couples and whether care becomes easier to personalize.
