A systematic review, meta-analysis and consensus statement in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women’s Health examined GLP-1 receptor agonist use before conception, during pregnancy and after birth in women with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes. The reported signals were broadly reassuring, but the evidence base remains limited.

GLP-1 use among reproductive-age women is rising quickly, and some pregnancies will include planned or unplanned exposure. Counselling needs better data, especially for first-trimester exposure, breastfeeding and outcomes separated by diabetes, obesity and treatment indication.

Prospective pregnancy registries, larger first-trimester exposure datasets, postnatal and breastfeeding data, and whether clinical guidance clearly distinguishes absence of evidence from evidence of safety.
