What happened
The NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health launched a $21 million initiative supporting six multidisciplinary projects. The teams will create computational models—including digital-twin approaches—to investigate hormone regulation and sex-specific biology.
Why it matters
Hormones act across interconnected systems, while many studies isolate a single tissue, condition or time point. Better models could help researchers generate and test more precise hypotheses, but they are research tools rather than digital replicas ready to guide individual care.
What to watch
The quality and representativeness of training data, external validation, transparent model assumptions, reproducibility and evidence that predictions improve research or clinical decisions.
